2021 Spirit of Union

“Spooky” Spirit of Union Award for 2021
The Horine Family’s 2021 Halloween decorations are the gems among tombstones and goblins! This year the retired couple has gone all out with the extra help from their 15 year old grandson, Cole Oppie. Cole actually called his grandfather, Fred Horine, and volunteered to help out with this year’s decorations. That could earn him favorite grandchild status amongst the nine grandchildren of Fred and Jeanie Horine who live at 123 Woodard Drive. The Horine’s have a longstanding tradition of decorating for Halloween. For the past twenty years Fred and Jeanie have enjoyed decorating for the holiday and passing out candy to trick or treaters. Fred claims it is a team effort but admits that he puts in most of the labor and his wife Jeanie is creative at planning the layout. Jeanie has even crafted some of the tombstones that surround the tree in their front yard. They estimate that this year’s decorations took two full days to complete and were glad to have Cole’s help. Fred and Jeanie are both retired. Fred is a retired City of Dayton Police Officer, where he served for twenty-eight years and he also worked for the Department of Homeland Security for sixteen years. Jeanie retired from a successful career in Corporate Training. They have lived in their home since 1985 where they have enjoyed raising three children, Brandy, Gidget, and Eric. Their children now have families of their own that live in the area. They are blessed with nine grandchildren and one greatgrandchild. The Horine’s like living in Union and are happy that their children were educated in the Northmont school system. They give Northmont school credit for providing their three children with a solid educational foundation for their many accomplishments as adults. The Horine’s enjoy music and going to concerts. Since Covid-19 they have had to put that on hold. They will be glad when they feel comfortable enough to get back to enjoying that part of their lives. They also enjoy gardening and they have a backyard pool where they host many summer holiday gatherings, creating lots of fun, family memories. They have even created a small sand beach on their back deck. This is attributed to their love of traveling to Key West. The City of Union wishes everyone a safe and happy Halloween. If you are Trick or Treating on October 31st don’t forget to stop by 123 Woodard Drive. It is SPOOKTACULAR!
